StellaLuna

There are two things that I do not really enjoy in lace knitting: sewing on a lace edge and casting off a million stitches at the bottom of a triangular shawl. StellaLuna was designed in response to those feelings. The knitting starts at the bottom of the shawl and the piece decreases as it goes. Yes, it is true that you will have to cast on a million stitches (249 to be precise), but at the end you knit 3 together and you are done! The shawl is ready for blocking!

The design is based on a border pattern from “Knitted Lace of Estonia” by Nancy Bush (Thank You!)

If you would like the pattern of this shawl - you are welcome to it! StellaLuna (scheme) I am planning to release more patterns like that one (and different once too) - so, please stay tuned and sing up to FOLLOW.
Thank you!

Attention: I have posted directions how to increase or decrease StellaLuna pattern here

  17. A young friend of mine, who is a wonderful Flamenco dancer, has recently lost her mother to breast cancer and I have in mind to create for her a shawl she can use in her dance. It needs to be quite heavy in order to move well, and a bit silky so as not to drag on her dress, and on the large size. I want the shawl to contain either a heart motif, or a rose motif, or both so she can feel wrapped in her mom's love as she dances. You demonstrate for us that wonderful designs can be created, but I'm hoping you might just go "aha" either you can imagine Stellaluna being adapted, or you have a pattern with the motifs already worked into it, or you feel inpsired to create on for all of us. I am an experienced knitter [50 years! I learned as a six year old sitting with my mother for days, while my dad was away on coursework as he transitioned from flying instructor during the war, to public relations in peace time) but I only tried one of my mom's knit lace doily patterns once and it wasn't bad but not great either... it never lay flat. I have thoroughly searched the web, but you may have more sites than I know of... so there's a pattern I don't yet know of, you have a suggestion for adapting Stellaluna [ perhaps a panel down the back between the triangles?], or you feel inspired to create a new pattern for all of us. Thank you in advance of your hoped-for reply. Paul

  18. HI Peppy62,
sorry it took me so long to answer.
Hearts are rather common motif in lace.
You can look them up on www.ravelry.com (it is knitting community): A TON of patterns for knitting and inspiration!

My play with the heart motif can be found here:
    http://tashaknits.blogspot.com/2010/06/hearts-upon-hearts-dozens-of-hearts.html
(pattern will be written at some point...)

Another place to look is in "Knitted lace of Estonia" book (look here http://tashaknits.blogspot.com/2011/01/winter-wipeout-sale-at-interweave.html)
In the book the "Greta Garbo pattern" is really are flowers made out of hearts.
I will do a post at some point about that particular pattern.
    Hope that helps

  19. Hello! Just wondering can this pattern be worked with circular needles? I prefer them. I am trying to advance from simple knitting... getting future projects and would like to order yarn and needles soon. Thanks :)
